Hello! Welcome to Hispanic Canadian Voices, the new blog of the Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council.
What’s This Project About?
Hispanic Canadian Voices came about as a space for dialogue and to amplify the voices of our community. Through interviews and conversations with artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, we aim to highlight inspiring projects and personal stories that reflect the diversity, complexity, and richness of our experiences in Canada.
Who’s Behind This Blog?
My name is Maria Pia Maiti. I’m Argentinian and I live in Toronto with my husband and a cat who hates to cuddle. I was born and raised in Junin, a small city in the province of Buenos Aires that you have probably never heard of, but it’s about 200 kilometers from Rosario, the hometown of Lionel Messi.
I have always felt an endless curiosity about what lay beyond the lagoons surrounding my hometown. That restlessness led me to move away at 17, go to university to become an English teacher and translator, teach in Australia, and spend five years in New York working in international exchange programs.
I love reading and reflecting on identity, immigration, and multilingualism. Two years ago, I started a personal blog where I write about my family’s life between cultures and languages, and about the books I read along the way.
Last year, I joined the HCHC as a volunteer and wrote a few pieces about the Latin Parade, the Fall Festival, and the Toronto Latin American Film Festival (LATAFF). This year, I’m excited to speak with so many people whose work I admire and to share those conversations on this blog.
A Preview of the First Interview
The first interview on this blog will feature four young Hispanic Canadians who participated in the documentary The Espanglish Generation—directed by Oscar Vigil and co-produced by Sergio Lasky and Jonathan Smith—which premiered at LATAFF in 2024. We’ll talk about what it’s like to live between two worlds and how their bilingual and bicultural identities allow them to see and understand reality from more than one perspective, a kind of multicultural superpower.
