A heartfelt closing that celebrates the diversity and talent of Argentine cinema, leaving a lasting legacy in the community
The Toronto Latin American Film Festival (LATAFF), now in its ninth edition, has come to an end, leaving an unforgettable mark on the hearts of all Latinos and lovers of our culture. What began on October 17 with the exciting premiere of the moving documentary The Espanglish Generation came to a close on Sunday, October 27, with a tribute to Argentine cinema featuring films such as Muchachos and El sonido de antes. This brought a golden finale to a festival that will live forever in the memories of those who experienced it.
The Espanglish Generation immersed us in a deep reflection on multicultural identity and the enduring strength of family and unity within our communities. This powerful documentary resonated with the voices of past and future generations, reaffirming the resilient spirit of those who proudly embrace their heritage. Every moment on screen became an intimate reconnection with our roots — a reminder of the strength that defines us.
In addition, the festival took us on a journey through the rich and colourful landscape of Latin American cinema, showcasing films from Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Costa Rica. Each one brought us closer to our traditions, our stories, and that unique blend of flavours and emotions that only cinema can capture.
One of the most enriching aspects of LATAFF was, without a doubt, the film forums — which this year stood out with the screenings of Añil (El Salvador) and Himno (Chile). These spaces for dialogue not only encouraged reflection but also strengthened our community bonds, addressing the social, political, and cultural realities that shape our stories. Every conversation and exchange made us feel more connected — not only to cinema, but to one another.
The success of the 2024 Toronto Latin American Film Festival
Saturday, October 19, dedicated to cultural exchange, was truly unforgettable. Screenings such as Devenir Familia and Sin papeles, along with a dynamic selection of Latin-Canadian short films, took us on an emotional journey — one that made us question, dream, and feel. This day was a powerful reminder of the emerging talent within our community in Canada, of the freshness and diversity that these filmmakers bring, and of the importance of continuing to support these creative voices.
The success of the 2024 Toronto Latin American Film Festival would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment of our volunteers, who are the heart and soul of the festival. To them, we extend our deepest gratitude. We also recognize the invaluable support of the consulates and organizations that, year after year, join in this celebration of art and culture.
See you next year — ready to experience more emotions, more stories, and the very best of Latin American cinema in Toronto. Follow LATAFF on social media to stay up to date on everything coming for October 2025, when we will once again proudly celebrate our Hispanic/Latin heritage!
